Good afternoon, CodeRVA Families-

We have just a few items for you before we head out into the Labor Day weekend.  As a reminder, our school is closed on Monday September 7.

When we return on September 8, the first Lost and Found of the year will be put out and then items will exit the school forever on September 11.  Students who think they have lost an item should stop by the hallway where the 100s restrooms and Dr. Goranson’s office are located.

At the most recent School Board meeting our 2026-27 Standards of Student Conduct booklet was approved.  This document is available 24-7 online on our website here, and if your family would prefer a printed copy, please notify us at info@coderva.org.

Next, it’s time to hit the barber or the salon for a fresh cut!  Please see the note below from our Instructional Specialist, Mr. Neal:

  • No back to school season would be complete without reminders about Picture Day! Strawbridge Studios will be at CodeRVA on Thursday September 17 to take photos of the entire student body. These photos will be used for our Yearbook and school IDs (printed only 1 time each year using this fall photo), but you also have the chance to order photos if you want keepsakes to remember this season of your student’s life. Please see this flyer from Strawbridge with information on choosing the background color, portrait type, touch-up services, etc. for Picture Day as well as how to order prints online. Paper copies of the flyer will be available to pick up in the main office if needed.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Neal at brennan.neal@coderva.org.

Mr. Neal is also in charge of items students may have more interest in than a photo.  Check out the message below!

  • Once again, we are assembling teams for the annual Congressional App Challenge! This official student STEM competition for the US House of Representatives allows for students to show off their ideas where they apply their coding skills. Students can be solo or work in a team of up to 4 students and submit any sort of coding project: mobile apps, desktop apps, web-based tools or platforms, assistive technology, games, robotic codes, etc. CodeRVA has had contest winners in the past, so we want to keep the good ideas flowing!  Any students who are interested need to email Mr. Neal (brennan.neal@coderva.org) by September 18th before they can submit their team’s application. Students may not apply using CodeRVA’s name until they have met with Mr. Neal and have their project approved.

Here’s an item for families that you don’t want to miss.  Join our awesome CodeRVA PTSA Today!  Below is all the information from them you need:

  • Why should I become a member?

    • Connect with our school community

    • Support student passions

    • Invest in resources and show appreciation for teachers

    • Assist with activities for students such as homecoming and snack cart

  • There is no wrong way to PTSA!  Join today: https://www.givebacks.com/causes/coderva

Here is an optional item for any of our students who attended Prom last year.  You may remember our DJ for the evening was actually the family of one of our students.  If you enjoyed their work and are interested in dropping them a Google Review, you can do so here.

Last but not least, our pals at the Virginia Department of Education want you to see the information below:

  • Postsecondary Opportunities for High School Students Webpage: Virginia Code § 22.1-206.2 directs VDOE and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) to distribute and post information that helps high school students make informed decisions about their futures. This includes information about the costs and benefits of different educational and certificate programs, as well as information to help students understand and plan for their postsecondary options.  The Postsecondary Opportunities for High School Students webpage and the Level Up Virginia website each contain information for students on preparing, applying, and paying for college, as well as information on degree options and labor market career projections.

That is it for today, Raptors!  It’s been a long hot week here, and we are hoping for cooler temperatures to welcome back our Raptors next week.  I hope all our families have safe, fun weekends!

Are you someone who has time during the day for volunteering?  If so, please check out this related volunteer opportunity that starts on Thursday, September 10th:

  • We need one volunteer to pick up Weekend Backpacks from FeedMore for students. FeedMore is located at 8020 Villa Park Drive, Richmond, VA 23228. Each bag contains 6 shelf-stable, quick to prepare meals for students. Your job would be to pick up the backpacks and deliver them to CodeRVA each Thursday morning. These meals help ensure that students have nutritious food to take home for the weekend.  If you’re able to help with this initiative, please reach out to Ms. Welsh (ryanne.welsh@coderva.org) for additional information. Your assistance would make a significant difference for our students and their families.

Our next item is one we are required to send out at the start of the school year.  In the unlikely event our building becomes uninhabitable due to an emergency like a fire, flood, etc., you need to know where to retrieve your student.  In the event we need to evacuate, we will send an emergency message using our typical communication methods (text, call, email), and we will ask for your patience and understanding while we prioritize working with students directly first and not answering the phone or emails, even though I know as a parent that may heighten your stress levels.  If we leave our building, we will first use SCOR (Sports Center of Richmond at 1385 Overbrook Road) as our evacuation location.  In the event that building is also compromised, we will go to CarMax Park complex.  Once we have determined the crisis is over we will begin releasing students, but please note that even in an emergency we will not release a student to anyone who is not listed on the Student Information Form we ask families to complete or to someone who cannot verify their identity with a Driver’s License or other state/federal identification.  We will always err on the side of student safety and keep students with school personnel rather than releasing them to an unknown individual.

For those families who are interested in learning more, there is a link on our School Counselors’ page on our website to this resource: Parent & Caregiver Resources for Self-Harm, Suicide, & Violence Prevention | Virginia Department of Education.  The VDOE would also like you to be aware of LockandTalk.org and the new legislation of § 18.2-56.2  or Allowing Access to Firearms by Children:

  • A. It shall be unlawful for any person to recklessly leave a loaded, unsecured firearm in such a manner as to endanger the life or limb of any child under the age of fourteen. Any person violating the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor.

  • B. It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to authorize a child under the age of twelve to use a firearm except when the child is under the supervision of an adult. Any person violating this subsection shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. For purposes of this subsection, “adult” shall mean a parent, guardian, person standing in loco parentis to the child or a person twenty-one years or over who has the permission of the parent, guardian, or person standing in loco parentis to supervise the child in the use of a firearm.

Diabetes Types I and II Informational One-Pager:  In accordance with HB 1301 (SB 122), VDOE and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) collaborated to develop Diabetes Information for Parents, an informational one-page resource for parents and guardians about Diabetes Mellitus Types I and II. This document outlines common signs and symptoms of diabetes and includes links to evidence-based resources to help families stay informed about this chronic condition.  Families are strongly encouraged to maintain regular well-child checkups with their child’s health care provider and consult with them about any health concerns.

Is your student driving to school this year?  If so, please note families will need to complete this form.  (We will also have paper copies available in the Main Office if needed.)  No students may drive to school without a completed form, and there is no parking fee associated with this form.  Even if a student has a completed form on file from last year, we must have a new form completed for this school year.  As a reminder, CodeRVA students should park their vehicles in the parking lot at CodeRVA only. Students should obey all street signs and not park in restricted locations as they may be towed.  CodeRVA is not held responsible for any vehicles that are towed from the areas surrounding our school.

Homecoming is October 9, and the dance will be 7-9 PM upstairs in The Park’s Hideaway.  Stay tuned for more details and this year’s theme.

Back to School Night is September 23.  Exact times for this event are still being settled, but you can estimate it will start around 6 PM.
