Good afternoon, CodeRVA Families-

You can tell we are in Back to School mode with the number of updates we have for you this week.  Get comfortable!

Next, check out what our School Counseling Department has planned for our first Flex Day:

  • GRASP (GReater Aspirations Scholarship Program) representative, Joyce King will speak to all of our 12th graders about scholarships and the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) process.

  • 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who are below 70% in their World Language Virtual Virginia courses as of 9/10/26 will receive extra assistance from our staff.

  • 10th and 11th grade students who are below 70% in their Economics and Personal Finance class will receive extra assistance from their teacher, Ms. Boor.

We had our first PTSA meeting of the year this week, and here is a reminder from that awesome team:

Attention families of 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students who are interested in learning how to drive!

  • CodeRVA will once again be providing its own driver’s education course taught by one of our teachers (Ms. Jessica Minks) asynchronously online. The DMV website has all steps for obtaining a Driver’s License here. This program satisfies the classroom component of the DMV’s Step 1: “Successfully complete a state-approved driver education program.” Upon successful completion of the driver education program, families will receive a signed completion DEC-1 card by Ms. Minks. This card can be given to the behind the wheel instructor. Behind the wheel is offered through many home school divisions and private companies.  Unfortunately CodeRVA does not offer a behind the wheel option for students.  Please note we are often asked about the two topics below, and we have tried to provide responses.  These slides will be shared with students at CodeRVA, and it may be helpful for families to preview them in advance.

    • Obtaining a learner’s permit is separate from completing a driver education program.  Learner’s permits can be obtained at the DMV when students turn 15 and 6 months, and CodeRVA does not have to be a part of the process.

    • The test to obtain a permit or Driver’s License is not the same as the final exam students take with their driver’s education course.

  • If you are interested in signing up for Driver’s Ed with CodeRVA, please read the following information carefully.

    • Families will be responsible for a $110 payment to CodeRVA’s Online School Payment (OSP) before students are enrolled in the course. Payments can be made on OSP now until October 16.

    • Once families have paid CodeRVA, students will be added to a course in Canvas.

    • The CodeRVA Driver’s Ed course will run from November 9, 2026 – March 19, 2027. There will be no extensions past March 19 for completion of this course.

    • Students must spend a minimum of 30 hours on the course prior to taking a final exam that will be proctored at school. The course includes the state law-required 90 minute Parent/Teen video and contract and asynchronous online coursework.

    • Ms. Minks is currently on maternity leave, so any questions about the Driver’s Education course should be directed to Mr. Brennan Neal, our Instructional Specialist, at brennan.neal@coderva.org

    • Any questions about payments and finances should be directed to Melody Krupnik at melody.krupnik@coderva.org

    • Once the course has begun, please direct any course-related questions to Jessica Minks at jessica.minks@coderva.org.

Before you spend all your money on clothes, please note all students who have unpaid fees were given a printed list of fees today at school.  Please ask your student for this sheet of paper.  If you would like to pay your fees over the weekend, you can refer to this document: How do I Pay School Fees? to assist you with logistics, and Henrico County has created this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4OD1u9Tpic for those unfamiliar with the OSP system.  If you have any additional questions about what your student’s fees are, please notify Mrs. Melody Krupnik at melody.krupnik@coderva.org or 804-968-1822.  As a reminder, students with outstanding fees cannot attend Homecoming, college campus visits, Prom, or Graduation until their fees are resolved.

We have one item to pass along from our friends at the Virginia Department of Education: The Virginia Supplemental Resource Guide for Families of Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  Pursuant to Virginia Code § 22.1-217.04, VDOE has developed, in coordination with the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, The Virginia Supplemental Resource Guide for Families of Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. This series of resources includes charts and checklists that families can use to support and track their child’s early language and literacy development as well as contact information and website links for statewide supports in Virginia developed in collaboration with partnering agencies and programs.

Last but not least today, our partners at the University of Richmond sent over a wide variety of events in case your family is interested in checking them out:

  • Tuesday September 22 6 – 8 p.m. VPM Headquarters: This forum is designed to help voters better understand the issues, the facts, and what’s at stake for the Commonwealth. Each topic will feature a moderated discussion followed by an audience Q&A, giving attendees the opportunity to hear directly from the experts. Topics for this forum include the growth of data centers in Virginia and two of the three proposed constitutional amendments.  This event is FREE, but space is limited. This talk, Uncontested Divorces: Light Lift for the Pro Bono Attorney, Huge Relief for the Grateful Client, will feature speakers Lisa Bennett, Esq., Central Virginia Legal Aid Society; Sarah Merryman, Esw., Capitol One. No back to school season would be complete without reminders about Picture Day! Strawbridge Studios will be at CodeRVA on Thursday September 17 to take photos of the entire student body. These photos will be used for our Yearbook and school IDs (printed only 1 time each year using this fall photo), but you also have the chance to order photos if you want keepsakes to remember this season of your student’s life. Please see this flyer from Strawbridge with information on choosing the background color, portrait type, touch-up services, etc. for Picture Day as well as how to order prints online.
