Good afternoon, CodeRVA Families-

If your house is anything like mine, all you’ve been talking about this week is the weather.  I think it is safe to say we are going to get some winter weather and we are going to miss some school.  How much of each is yet to be determined.  As with earlier in the year, we will send our typical email/call/text to notify you of our status as soon as we coordinate a decision with our school division partners.  As a reminder, if we are open and your school division is closed and does not provide transportation to your student, that absence will not count against them.  Lastly, we plan to build in plenty of time for students to play in the snow each day, but we have just begun a new marking period and teachers may be posting assignments while we are out.  Students should be checking their email and logging into Canvas daily.

This was a previously announced event, but I am refreshing it now that we have a backup date identified in case we are out next Wednesday:

Here is another set of reminders about how you can get involved with our awesome PTSA!  Please note that if we are out of school or delayed to school on January 28, the Senior Breakfast will be rescheduled to February 4.

We are scheduled to have a Flex Day on January 28 and you can check out what our School Counseling Department has planned.  Please note if we are out of school or delayed to school on January 28, we will not host Flex Day and we will not reschedule a second Flex Day for February.

  • Our School Counselors will hold a PSAT score overview with all tenth and eleventh graders.

  • Our GRASP advisor, Joyce King, will be available to meet with Seniors and will contact Senior families regarding financial aid opportunities.

Here is something you can do when we are out of school next week.  Please note all current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade families are required to respond by January 31.  Thank you!

  • It’s time to complete your annual Student Intent to Return Form for 2026-27!  Families must complete this form annually to indicate they wish to remain at CodeRVA for the upcoming school year.  Thank you for helping us plan for our staffing needs and run the most accurate lottery possible at the end of February!

Here is an unusual and fun opportunity for families and their students to partner with our friends at the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles:

  • Thank you for opting into the beta test of our new driver’s manual learning experience! We’re excited to have you and your teen participate.  You and your teen will have exclusive access to our mobile learning site designed to make studying for the driver’s permit more engaging and effective. Your teen can explore interactive lessons, practice quizzes, and other features at their own pace. We’ll be gathering feedback to help us improve the experience before the official launch.  This research and the beta learning tool are completely separate from DMV records, permit applications, and official driver’s license data. Participation in this research has no impact on your student’s actual permit exam, DMV records, or driving privileges.

  • Mobile Site Link: https://dmv-poc-env-qa-ssc-dmvs-projects.vercel.app/ ; simply open the link on your mobile device, click “Get Started, ”enter any username and password, and you’re in!

  • Last Step?  Complete the final survey at the end of the beta period!

  • If you have any questions or encounter any issues, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team:

  • You can also schedule time with us at this booking link for a short 15–20 minute conversation where we’ll learn more about your study habits and feedback related to preparing for the driver’s permit test.

  • Thank you again for being part of this important research. Your feedback will help shape a better learning experience for Virginia teens.

  • Data Privacy: Your privacy is important to us. Your usage of the beta site will remain private and anonymous, with no personal information collected. Also you will not be downloading anything onto your or your child’s device, only opening a website. All feedback and usage data will be used solely to improve the learning experience. More details about data privacy are below.

  • What We DO Collect:

    • Anonymous usage data (which modules were viewed, quiz scores, time spent in the tool)

    • Survey responses with feedback about the learning experience

    • Technical data (device type, browser type, error logs) to improve performance

    • All of this data is anonymous and cannot be traced back to you or your student.

  • What We DO NOT Collect:

    • No names, addresses, phone numbers, or email addresses within the beta tool

    • No photos, videos, or recordings of participants

    • No personal identifiers that could link usage data to a specific person

    • No account creation or registration requiring personal information

    • No geolocation or tracking data

    • No social security numbers, DMV records, or driving history

    • No credit card or payment information

  • Data Security:

    • All data is transmitted using secure, encrypted connections

    • Usage data is stored on secure servers accessible only to the SingleStone research team

    • Data will be retained only as long as needed to analyze findings and improve the tool

    • Aggregated, anonymized findings may be shared with the Virginia DMV and used in research reports

Last but not least today, I was asked earlier in the week about what procedures CodeRVA will follow in the event ICE were to attempt to enter our school.  Thankfully we have not encountered this situation so far, and for once our obscure location underneath a bar could work in our favor.  However, please know that we would approach this situation as we do others.  Our priority is to provide a safe, secure, and uninterrupted learning environment for all our students on a daily basis, and allowing someone to enter without an educational purpose or legal authorization would go against that priority.  We love all our students at CodeRVA, and we take our role of in loco parentis very seriously when it comes to their safety and well-being.

We hope all our Raptors are able to stay safe and warm as we head into the weekend!  Take care, everyone!
