Good afternoon, CodeRVA Families-

Even though we skipped a week, this edition is very light on new information.  For those of you who celebrate, you’ll be able to get to Halloween even more quickly now.

Please remember Monday and Tuesday are virtual Student Workdays.  Please encourage your student to open up their main Canvas dashboard; scroll down; and show you their current grades.  They can also sort the grades for you by Marking Period 1, 2, and their year long grade, which is the grade we use to determine if a student was successful in a course.

For those of you who are concerned with the grades you see, we encourage you to reach out directly to your student’s teachers to set up a phone call or virtual meeting if you would like to discuss how to help support your student.  We don’t have an official Parent-Teacher Conference day designated because we found the first several years we held this event we had very low participation due to families having multiple students in multiple school divisions.  Please know our staff is always available to talk to you when you have concerns, and after we review each student’s grades each marking period, we may contact you to schedule a conference.

We hope our students will use their time at home to catch up on any missing assignments and send their teachers an email if they have questions about assignments.  Our staff will be in meetings on Monday and Tuesday throughout the day, but we will be available by email (unless a staff member has taken leave time).

Our only new announcement this week is one sent to us from a community partner:

  • Our Youth Leadership Award is a special category within BHMVA’s 1895 Living Legacy Awards that recognizes the courage, integrity, and vision of young leaders across Virginia!

  • Inspired by Barbara Johns, who at just 16 years old led a student walkout in Prince Edward County demanding equal education, which was an act that helped shape Brown v. Board of Education. This award honors students who embody that same fearless spirit.

  • It’s about celebrating the next generation of changemakers. Those standing up, speaking out, and creating a better future in their schools and communities.

  • Know a young leader making an impact? Nominate them today for the Youth Leadership Award at BHMVA’s 1895 Living Legacy Awards. The deadline to nominate a student is 5 p.m., November 7.

That is it for today!  I hope you have a great weekend, and we look forward to seeing your students on Wednesday rested and ready to learn!

Attention Class of 2026 Families!  If you haven’t already done so, please mark your calendars now for Graduation 2026 at 10 AM on May 15, 2026.  We are still deciding on a venue, and we hope to land that soon.  Although we have loved using the Greater Richmond Convention Center, the cost is extraordinary when we consider how small our total attendance is.  We may end up there anyway, but we are currently exploring other venues, including hosting Graduation on the campus of a local faith partner who is willing to accept just a fraction of the cost to use their space.  Stay tuned for updates!

Attention Families of 9th and 10th Grade Students!  As a reminder, here is our previously released information about YMCA memberships for your students.

  • We are so grateful to the YMCA of Greater Richmond for once again giving us a free student membership for each of our 9th and 10th grade students enrolled in Health/Physical Education 9 or 10.  (Unfortunately there are no memberships available for 11th or 12th grade students since they do not take these classes.)  Check out this: CodeRVA YMCA Activation Guide 2025-26.docx to sign up if you are interested.
