Raptors Reunited Fall 2020 Plan

After discussing various local plans and reviewing their supporting documents, we have made the difficult decision to move to an all online format for at least the first two 6 week marking periods of this school year (MP 1 is 9/8-10/16; MP 2 is 10/19-12/3).  Full details can be found within our VDOE Phase 3 Instructional Learning Plan.  Like other school divisions, we will continue to monitor the conditions needed for reopening schools in a hybrid or in person model.

Student Schedule

Student Schedules:

  • As we look at what student schedules will look like to start the year, we acknowledge that our rising 9th graders may have had a highly flexible end to their school year.  We know most divisions did not require students to attend online sessions and did not take grades.  Please be aware that this was not the experience for CodeRVA students.
  • Thanks to a variance from the VDOE, our students still attended classes online throughout the spring and were taught and assessed.  That model is one we have refined for this school year.  Here are some important points to know about our student schedules.
    • All students will virtually attend their regularly scheduled classes on a daily basis.
    • Teachers will be holding office hours for students, and students may be required to attend those sessions if they miss breakouts or need additional assistance.
  • We have created a sample schedule below so that you can visualize what a week would look like for a student.  This schedule will easily be able to convert to our regular schedule when we return to in person learning.

Virtual Learning Plan

All Virtual Learning

All Virtual Learning

Students work from home 5 days per week

Virtual

Breakout Instruction

  • Virtual sessions scheduled during regular class time at least twice per week
  • Scheduled on Google Calendar by Friday at 3:00 PM
  • May include graded activities
  • Breakout sessions will include activities, collaboration, and active engagement to support our blended learning model (these are not just help sessions and are not optional).
  • Attendance will be taken.
  • Students will be expected to show themselves on camera during virtual breakouts (at a minimum for attendance purposes).  If students have concerns about being on camera for an extended period of time, they should speak to their teacher or school counselor to discuss options.
  • Students will regularly interact during breakouts through on camera discussions, verbal responses, and/or written responses.

Online Course Work

  • Students will work independently on online course work when they are not scheduled for a virtual session.
  • Students will meet the due dates for assignments.
  • Online course work will typically take students  2-3 hours per class per week in addition to the time spent in breakouts.
  • Teachers will post a weekly announcement in Canvas by 8 AM on Monday of each week to outline the assignments, expectations, reminders for the week ahead.

Electives

  • Students will have a Personalized Learning Time (PLT) time built into their schedule each day

Wednesdays

  • In addition to attending an extended Morning Meeting session, students will have a more flexible morning schedule to accommodate scheduled meetings with School Counselors and Special Education staff.  Not every student will have a meeting scheduled, so this time could also be used to catch up on blended learning courses in Canvas or online electives.
  • After lunch, students may be required to attend office hours with their regularly scheduled teacher.  Teachers will select students for office hours based on students’ academic needs, to make up work missed due to an absence, etc.  All students are welcome to attend office hours though if they would like additional support for a teacher.
  • If a student is not scheduled for office hours and does not need additional support, they should continue to work on blended learning courses or online electives.
  • This flexible Wednesday schedule will (most likely) shift in MP 2 as we begin scheduling Flex Day activities, which are designed to connect to students’ interests, provide time for guest speakers, etc.

Tech Support

  • Students will have access to tech support during each school day.
  • We will be creating a schedule for after school and evening hours when parents can get help with technology if they are not available during the school day.

  • As you know, school begins on September 8, 2020.  Because we recognize our incoming 9th grade class is least familiar with our school (and starting any new school can be challenging), we will be limiting the first day of school to only 9th grade students.

  • Our Ninth Grade Academy has also been expanded beyond August 26 and special sessions will be held on September 8.

  • Our returning 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students will begin their regular class schedule on Wednesday, September 9.

  • However, all students in all grade levels who are taking a World Language should be working in Virtual Virginia beginning Wednesday, September 2.  Students will be contacted by their Virtual VA teachers no later than the week of August 31.

  • Students taking Health/PE or Economics and Personal Finance (EPF) should be working on those courses beginning Monday, September 21.

  • All students taking Dual Enrollment courses will begin those courses the week of September 8 on their regular schedule.

Supporting Our Raptors:

  • Please note our Mondays and Wednesday bell schedules will be slightly different while we are in the virtual environment.  We know much more goes into supporting students than just providing academic content.  Learning at home is not easy for everyone, and we want to simulate the school experience as best we can while we are in the virtual environment.

  • We will have mandatory Morning Meetings on Mondays and Wednesdays.  These meetings are organized by small grade level groups and led by staff members.  Some of these meetings will be converted into schoolwide or whole grade level events as needed.  Morning Meetings are designed to help our students build relationships within their grade levels and across the school.

  • Our School Counselors are committed to providing support to our students and families during this unique time. They will be providing optional small-group and individual virtual spaces for students to receive academic, career, and personal content and support. Please reach out to them with any questions or concerns as they arise.

Attendance

Attendance:

  • Unlike the last few months of the previous school year, daily attendance processes will be in place.  Students will be expected to appear on time and in person for classes online.
  • Teachers will document attendance and students will be required to interact with the class through activities, discussions, etc.
  • Our teachers will be teaching with their cameras on as we seek to replicate the classroom environment as much as possible.
  • If a student cannot attend a class session in the virtual environment, they should notify their teacher (or a parent may do so) as soon as possible.
  • We also know there may be times when a student needs to miss an entire day of instruction or leave early/arrive late (for non-COVID 19 related medical appointments, family situations, etc.), and we ask that the school be notified by a parent.  This could be an email just as we did before March 2020.
  • When students miss a class session(s), they may be asked to attend additional office hours with a teacher to make-up work.
  • Families will receive an automated email notification when students miss a breakout session, and they will also receive a daily phone call if students miss a full day at school.  Our teachers and school counselors will be contacting parents by phone and email to discuss attendance concerns.
  • If your family has questions about our attendance procedures, please contact your school counselor.

Resources & Additional Support

Special Education and 504s:

  • For our students who participate in Special Education and currently have IEPs, or those students with 504 plans, your case managers will be regularly contacting you to monitor your progress and help you meet your goals.  If you have questions or need support, please contact your case manager.

Communication:

  • No matter what our circumstances, we hope to remain in frequent contact with your families.  You should be receiving weekly parent updates called The Raptor Rundown.  If not, please email us at info@coderva.org and let us know.
  • You should also add in that email address to your contacts list so that your email filter does not think we are spam.
  • Please check Canvas weekly as well for teacher updates.

Resources for Families:

  • Even though we are in the virtual environment, students will still need access to school supplies.  Please check out our 2020-21 School Supply List.  If your family is having temporary or ongoing financial challenges, please contact your school counselor as we may be able to assist you with school supplies.
  • If your home does not have WiFi, we can provide support through a hotspot device.  This device has a limited data plan so students do have to be careful to make sure they only use it each day for school.  If you need this resource, please contact your school counselor.
  • We will be putting together a document for families that details any WiFi support home school divisions are providing.  Some smaller divisions have created WiFi connection points using school buses, vans, etc.  Once we have that information, we will send it out.  Likewise, we will do our best to find out what nutritional support school divisions are offering to families and if our students are eligible.
