Good afternoon, CodeRVA Families-
The holiday season is upon us! My family goes all in for Christmas, and November 1 is the official date when we start listening to all the holiday songs. It’s either Mariah Carey or an audiobook for my commutes from now until December 31!
First up this week, I would like to update families on some concerns we have had recently in our boys’ restrooms. Thankfully nothing serious has occurred yet, but we have noticed an increase in disregard for cleanliness and some minor vandalism. On the surface these behaviors might be chalked up to typical teenage behavior, but these are atypical for CodeRVA students. As someone who has worked in a wide variety of schools, I know there is only so much we can do to make a high school bathroom aesthetically pleasing, but I will say here we work very hard on keeping our facility clean and well-maintained for students. Anything we repair has to be done by our staff or volunteers as our landlord has begun charging us fees for minor repairs if they are due to student misbehavior.
Another way we approach students showing a disregard for school property is that we know this is a sign of student disengagement. Students who care about their school and community have no interest in ruining things for themselves or others. As a reminder, CodeRVA is a school of choice. If a student is so unhappy being with us, I would encourage them to have a conversation with their family or our staff about withdrawal from CodeRVA. We don’t want students to remain if they are going to act out inappropriately.
Lastly, we hope all our students who care about our community will report any damage or concerns they see immediately. Being able to narrow down problems without watching hours of camera footage will help us focus on individual students rather than the whole student body. We are firm believers in the practice of “See something; say something.”
I hope all families will take a moment to review these expectations with their Raptors this weekend, and please be aware any student who is involved in any sort of misbehavior in the restrooms will receive a consequence and families could be responsible for the repair of the facility. Now let’s move on to happier topics!
First, we’ve had several requests to re-open the spiritwear store we hosted earlier in the year. This link will open on Monday November 4 and remain open until November 15. This is not a fundraiser, so all items are being offered at the lowest prices possible: https://coderva.itemorder.com/
Next, please be aware all 9th graders will be completing their CPR Skills Check on Monday, November 25 during their Raptor Rotation. This is not a full CPR certification, but it does meet the graduation requirement of the CPR Skills Check. Students will perform chest compressions and simulate giving breaths to a CPR mannequin. Students currently in Health and PE 9 have a Marking Period 2 module on First Aid and Safety that aligns with the CPR skills check. Additional study materials are also available here. Please send any questions to Emily Cooper (emily.cooper@coderva.org).
Keeping on a health and wellness theme, PE Logs for students currently enrolled in Health and PE 9 and Health and PE 10 are due on Thursday, November 14. Students can access a printed copy of the PE Log in Raptor Rotation or a digital copy here. Students need to complete 12 hours of physical activity each marking period, but no more than 2 hours per activity. An adult signature for each logged activity is required. The PE Log is a significant portion of the grade for an online Health and PE Course.
Here is a document all our current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade families will want to check out. Our School Board has approved the 2025-26 school year calendar: SY26 CodeRVA Academic Calendar [Board Approved].pdf This document has also been posted on our website in case you forget to bookmark it.
Here is another site you may want to bookmark and/or share. Please check out the message below from our partners at ODGA, and I strongly encourage all our students enrolled in Data Science to see what they are learning in class at work in the real world!

Overall, the portal promotes government transparency by working to provide access to data in one centralized location. The portal now hosts 10,000 state, federal, and locality datasets and the ODGA team works to add new datasets from state agencies frequently. You won’t want to miss out on all of the interesting data on the portal, including:
That is it for this week, Raptors! Please remember we have a regular day of school on Monday, and then our students should be checking Canvas for assignments on Tuesday and contacting their teachers directly if they need any assistance. For all our families celebrating today, Happy Diwali!
