Good afternoon, CodeRVA Families-

We have a few updates for you this week as we careen to the end of July.  The summer is flying by like a Pterosaur!

First, as we have shared multiple times before, please start reminding your students now that cell phones will not be allowed to be out and visible between 8:50 AM-2:56 PM this year.  At 8:50 AM we will expect students to put away their phones without prompting.

Next, please be aware our previous provider of Driver’s Education services (VADETS) is no longer serving schools like ours in the same capacity.  So that we can continue to provide this option for families, we have had one of our staff (Ms. Minks) go back to school to become Driver’s Education certified.  As we take on the additional costs of hosting this program, we will no longer be able to offer a refund option for the successful completion of this course.  Families wishing to enroll in our Driver’s Education course this year will have a $100 non-refundable fee, and unfortunately this fee is not covered under our fee waiver program.  Families are always welcome to enroll in Driver’s Education through their home divisions or a private vendor.  Stay tuned for more specific information about Driver’s Education when school starts, but we are sharing this change now so that families can plan ahead.

If students are looking for something to work on this summer, here is an opportunity they may be interested in:

  • Since 2013, U.S. Representatives have sponsored an annual Congressional App Challenge for middle and high school students. This year, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan in the 4th District is looking for a record number of apps for the challenge. In order to participate, students must be in middle or high school, and students can register as individuals or as a team with up to four members.  Creating a team is CodeRVA’s preferred method of entering this contest!  Since our students attend school in the 4th Congressional District, all CodeRVA students are eligible for the App Challenge. Apps can be written in any programming language (such as C, C++, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, “block code”, etc.) and on any platform (such as PC, web tablet, robot, mobile, etc.). There are no limits on application themes or topics, but for obvious reasons they should be school-appropriate, and we have found in the past that winning apps typically serve a greater good for society.

  • Challenge winners are invited to attend a #HouseOfCode event in Washington, D.C., where their app will be on display and will remain on display at the US Capitol Building for at least a year. If students form a team, please let Dr. Goranson (kume.goranson@coderva.org) know by September 12, 2025. CodeRVA staff would like to help students register and find time to work together on their project. For more information about the Congressional App Challenge, check their website here.

Last but not least today, here is another recap of how you can pay your school fees in August.

  • All families who want to pay their 2025-26 school fees in person with cash or a check made payable to CodeRVA Regional High School can do so this year on August 13 4-6:30 PM here at CodeRVA.  We will also have computers set up so you can pay online in person if you would like, but please note the company that Henrico County uses to host our fee system does charge a fee for paying online.  (That fee does not go to CodeRVA and is typically 3-5% of the total cost of your fees.)  You are also (of course) welcome to pay online after August 13 from the comfort of your home and are not required to pay fees in person.  11th and 12th grade students taking Dual Enrollment courses should wait until August 13 or after to pay their fees once they receive their new schedule for 2025-26.  All families can check here for a complete listing of student fees by grade level and pathway.

  • We encourage you to stop by our PTSA membership table and join for the year if you do come in to pay your fees.  Some of our amazing PTSA volunteers will be on site to answer any questions you have about our PTSA.

  • Please note no tours will be given during this event, and no student devices will be distributed.  Current 11th and 12th grade CodeRVA students already have their devices (which they should bring fully-charged on August 18 when they return) and new 9th graders will receive their devices the following day at Ninth Grade Academy.  Current 10th grade CodeRVA students will receive their new laptops on August 18.

  • Ninth grade families are also welcome to pay their fees after Ninth Grade Academy concludes on Thursday, August 14.  If you are picking up your student you are welcome to pay fees between 3-3:30 PM here at CodeRVA.

That is it for today, Raptors!  I hope you have a great weekend, and stay safe!

Reminders for any student taking a course through Virtual Virginia in 2025-26:

  • All world language courses taken through Virtual Virginia will begin on Thursday, August 14. Before courses begin, make sure your Virtual VA student account is set up and ready to use. VVA will send an email to your CodeRVA account that will contain your username and instructions on setting up your password if you are a new user or a returning student who does not remember your password. If you have any issues accessing your account, please email VVA at support@virtualva.org

  • Each VVA instructor will host a Course Orientation Session to help you get started in your VVA course on the first day of class. Each course instructor will send an email with a meeting link for the Course Welcome Session.

School Counselors:

Special Education Case Managers for Students with IEPs, 504s, or EL services:

After July 17 our teaching and counseling staff will not be in the building (but the 7 of us lucky employees who work 12 months a year will be here), so if you have a time-sensitive question, please contact our main email: info@coderva.org so we can assist you.  All CodeRVA staff will return on August 11.

Attention all Seniors in the Class of 2026!  Here is all the information you need about Senior portraits, quotes, Yearbooks and more!

All 12th graders must show proof of two doses of Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine: one dose before age 16 and one dose at age 16 or older. If a student did not receive a single dose before age 16, one dose given at age 16 or older is fine.  Families can send a printed or scanned copy of the student’s shot record to cindy.crowder@coderva.org or send in a copy with the student.  The deadline for submitting this information is August 15th, but don’t wait if you have this information on hand now.  Students will not be able to attend school in the fall without verification of this immunization.  If you have questions or need additional assistance, please call Nurse Crowder at 968-1823 or email her at the address above.
