Attendance
For comprehensive information about Virginia’s Compulsory Attendance guidelines, please refer to the Standards for Student Conduct. Regular attendance is strongly encouraged. Please remember that attendance records are official school documents and can be subpoenaed to court.
In general, most absences can be excused for the following reasons, although this list is not comprehensive:
- Illness of student
- Serious illness in a family, which reasonably necessitates the absence of a student
- Death of family member
- Recognized religious holidays
- Legal or military obligation
- Home school closed for inclement weather and transportation not provided
Notes for absences are to be turned into the main office upon the student’s return and are not required when a student is absent due to approved school related activities. Students are responsible for making up all work missed. Teachers should remind the student of missed work, but it is the student’s responsibility to request and complete the missed assignments. All work must be completed within the number of days missed plus one day. Additionally, students can use their Chromebook or laptop to access their class assignments calendar noting assignments and daily lessons.
Arrival and Dismissal
The school day begins at 8:50 AM and ends at 2:56 PM. For families providing their own transportation, drop-off may begin as early as 8:00 AM and all students should be picked up no later than 3:15 PM. Families arriving to pick up their students for early dismissal should do so no later than 2:45 PM.
All bus riders should enter CodeRVA property through the gate on Durham Street and use the doors closest to the buses. For dismissal, most students will exit the same doors. Home school divisions providing transportation by van or car will pick up students by the main entrance of the school and students should exit through those doors.
Families who provide their own transportation should pick up and drop off their students by the main entrance as well.
Clinic Services
CodeRVA’s clinic is staffed by a Registered Nurse, Mrs. Cindy Crowder. Please contact the clinic directly at 804-968-1823 if you have medically-related questions. Families will be asked to supply updated health related information annually if their student has medical needs.
Emergency Drills: Fire, Tornado/Severe Weather, Earthquakes, Active Shooter
Emergency drills will be conducted on a regular basis at CodeRVA.
During a fire drill, students should follow their teacher to the designated evacuation site. Students transitioning in the hallway or using the restroom during a fire drill should report to the nearest adult upon exiting the building.
During a tornado/severe weather/earthquake drill, students should follow the directions of their teacher and will typically be asked to move to an interior portion of the building. Students in the open space during this type of drill should report to their assigned teacher for further instructions, or listen to the adults supervising the open space areas.
During drills related to intruders or active shooters, students should follow the directions of their assigned teacher, which may include remaining in place, sheltering in a classroom, or evacuating the building. In the event of a real emergency, students may be instructed to avoid, deny, and defend, if necessary.
Transportation
Bus transportation is provided and scheduled by each student’s home division. Specific transportation related questions are best answered by the home division, but CodeRVA staff will assist as much as possible. Families can anticipate receiving transportation related emails from both their home division and CodeRVA. While on the bus, students are under the supervision of the driver, and drivers have the same authority as a teacher in the classroom.
